Understanding Grief after Loss

Understanding Grief after Loss is a two-part offering of grief education.

Part I is a class to help you understand the grief process. Part II provides time for interaction with other bereaved and focuses on healthy coping skills for grieving the death of a loved one.

We recommend these classes as a beginning to your grief recovery and before registering for other events like our Death of a Spouse or Death of a Loved One support groups. There is no charge for the class.

To register: In the Enrollment box to the right, 1) click the box to the left of Understanding Grief after Loss Class ; 2) complete the sections Your Info:  and Loved One's Info:  on the lower right-hand side of this page; 3) in the Comments: box, write in your preferred month for this class (June, October, etc). Our drop-down dates for this class are not operational at this time. You will be contacted to confirm your registration.

Widowed Person's Lunch Bunch

A monthly support group for people who have lost a spouse. You do not have to register to attend. Lunch Bunch meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 11:30, January through October. It meets the third Wednesday in November and December at 11:30.

To have reminder post cards sent to you each month, with that month's date, time and restaurant location, check the Lunch Bunch box on the right side of this page and complete the form.

Death of a Spouse

This 5-week support group helps you as you mourn the death of your spouse. Here you will find support from others who know what you are going through, receive education about grief and how it can affect you, and experience exercises designed to help you remember with less pain. In order to gain the most healing from this support group, we recommend that you wait at least 3 months after your spouse's death before attending. Please register using the form to the right of this page.

Death of a Loved One     

This group is offered to meet registration demands. Please register using the form to the right of this page.

This is a 5-week support group for adults who are mourning the death of a PARENT, GRANDPARENT, SIBLING or FRIEND. It will assist you in understanding your grief and finding resources for coping with the special aspects of your relationship with your loved one. As with any support group, you will find the support from others will help you feel less alone.

After Suicide - After a Loved One's Suicide 

After Suicide is a monthly support group for people whose loved one died by suicide. The group meets the second Monday of each month from 6:00-  7:30 p.m. Please register using the form to the right of this page or call Terri Ray at (704) 861-8405 for more information. You must be interviewed in person or by phone before attending the first time.

Understanding the Grief of Children: A Class for Parents

This class is offered based on registrations received.

This class will help adults understand the grief of children and the best way to support them.

Children's Grief Support Group

This class is offered based on registrations received.

Please register using the form to the right of this page.

Children's groups are scheduled based on registration. For the best outcomes, children are placed in groups based on their ages and similarity of losses.

Summer Fridays Bereavement Series

Groups meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM, First Presbyterian Church, 1621 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, NC

There is no July meeting. The December meeting is replaced by the Candle Lighting Service held the second Sunday of December.
